Compasses
This Month's Gear Guru Question:
by Backcountry BobQ. I'm a beginning backpacker needing an orienting compass to use on backpacking trips (in conjunction with topo maps). What would be a recommendation for one of good value, highly accurate and compact.
Thank you

Hi Mike,
One of my favorite compasses is the simple Suunto
M2D Locator. At $19.95 it's a tough one to beat. I have found it to be very
accurate and reliable for map use while on backpacking trips. For an upgrade
the Brunton
Nexus Elite is a full featured compass with a sighting mirror (great for getting accurate bearings) and protective
cover. A little more money but it will last a lifetime of backpacking trips.
Good luck and happy hiking!
Bob
